Today on High As News we are back with good news about cannabis legalisation: Morocco joins the list of countries that have legalised therapeutic use of the plant.
Morocco legalises medical and therapeutic cannabis, but not recreational use
Morocco is the number 1 hash producer in the world, and with this new bill it is set to legalise certain medical and industrial uses of the plant. It arrives after more than three decades of prohibition in which close to 100,000 families have lived off growing kif illegally.
The country is joining the controlled legalisation trend we have been seeing lately. The government gives two main reasons. The first has a lot to do with the latest WHO decision: last December in Vienna, the organisation officially reviewed how cannabis is classified.
The WHO took cannabis off Schedule IV, the list of the most dangerous substances (such as cocaine or heroin), which have little to do with the plant. The second reason is purely economic: with legalisation, the market is expected to go from growing 30% a year to figures close to 60% at a European level. The new law will require farmers who want to make their business legal to group together in cooperatives, which will in turn sell their harvest to a national agency.
This kind of news makes us happy. There is still a way to go before recreational use is legalised, but legalising medical use is a big step towards full legalisation.
