Today we mix weed and fashion to talk about the influence of the hoodie (the hooded sweatshirt) as an essential garment of the stoner tribe.
The hoodie, a symbol of the stoner tribe
The High As blog wants to be more than a stoner blog: a source of inspiration about the whole lifestyle around the plant. And fashion is everywhere, so we are going to go over how such an everyday garment ended up as an icon of stoner culture.
A bit of history
1) 1930. Champion, a brand that made clothing for athletes, starts producing the first sweatshirts, hoodless at the time. Athletes took to them happily and the crewneck (the sweatshirt with no hood) became a widely worn garment.
2) The 40s and 50s. The hood is added to protect athletes waiting their turn on the sidelines of tracks and sports halls from the cold; that is why it was called the “sideline sweatshirt”. Back then the whole hood could be taken off with a zip.
3) The 60s. Athletes and college students adopt it first. Girlfriends used to steal their boyfriends' hoodies, and that is how the hooded sweatshirt made its way organically into sportswear and casual clothing. Shortly after, factory and construction workers took it on too for its comfort and protection.
4) The 70s. It was already a common garment, although it was still seen as a bit fringe. That is when hip hop culture and stoners adopt the hoodie: it was mostly worn by graffiti writers, who wanted to cover their identity while painting train cars, and by break dancers, because it was comfortable to move in.
It has played an important role in stoner culture. Weed has always been a frowned upon substance and, even though the stigma is easing, the road has been rough. For decades, the hood let the smoker go unnoticed and keep a low profile. We cannot live without hoodies, and that is why, alongside the smoking gear, we decided to include it in our clothing collection.
5) The 80s and 90s. The hooded sweatshirt did not fully enter the vocabulary of fashion until hip hop went mainstream and people from every social background started wearing it with pride.
