We woke up to the news that two men have been nicked in Granada with an indoor grow inside a lorry trailer. Seeing as it is in the headlines, we have rounded up the weirdest places where the cops have found plantations.
The 5 most unusual places where cannabis grows have been found
Yes, this could only happen in Spain. This morning the news broke about a police raid on a plantation: the imagination of the dealers has no limits and this time they had used a lorry trailer to plant 300 cuttings. Two men aged 51 and 56 were arrested. Given how absurd the whole thing is, we have put together a few examples of indoor grows that do justice to the saying “necessity is the mother of invention”.
Right opposite a police station
You have to be pretty fearless to set up an indoor grow while living directly opposite a police station. That is exactly what two men aged 30 and 40 did in Plymouth, in south-west England: they got busted with 146 cannabis plants on the 4th floor. The police only had to cross the street to arrest them, along with £30,000 of already harvested weed. The Trojan horse strategy worked thousands of years ago, but with today's technology it is better not to chance it.
In an underground shipping container complex
In January 2015, two men were arrested after a huge grow was discovered in a field in the English county of Somerset. It was set up inside four cargo containers buried underground, all connected by a complex system of tunnels, and you got in through a trapdoor built into the floor of a caravan. It might sound like Breaking Bad, but it is real life.
In a cemetery
Back in 2008, the Guardia Civil in Laguna de Duero, Valladolid, charged the gardener of the municipal cemetery over a small plantation. He was growing four plants in pots inside the graveyard, in a spot well out of sight of visitors. It ended up as nothing more than an anecdote because it did not go over the legal plant limit, but he went down in history as the first grower to plant on holy ground.
In a Cold War nuclear bunker
During the Cold War, the Drakelow tunnels were turned into a secret nuclear bunker meant to protect regional government politicians. In 2013 a big illegal grow with more than 400 plants was discovered inside them. Getting hold of a bunker might be a decent way to save on rent, but if you do it, do not pick one that famous.
In Rome's abandoned metro
It was 2021 when the Italian police discovered a space of more than 5,000 m² given over to growing cannabis inside an abandoned metro station, built back in Mussolini's day. It is obvious by now that the imagination of the dealers has no limits.
